HeadTreez.com is a place where you can build your own website in minutes. It's quick, it's easy, it's free. Probably the easiest way to understand what HeadTreez are, is to browse a few of the samples and then imagine what you can do.

Until now, if you wanted a website, you needed to be atleast a little savvy with web technologies. The goal for HeadTreez was to create a platform that would allow anyone to create website. Additionally, it has to managable from anywhere you have internet access, without the need to upload web project files. Finally, it has powerful and flexible so that it can be organized properly by the owner of the site. Oh, yeah and it has to be Free!

How to Sign up

Signing up is simple and completely free.

Click the 'Sign-up' link in the top or bottom menu of any page.

We ask for some information to help us create your site, including your email address which will be your user name, and your preferred site name.

The site name can NOT be changed after your account is created so please choose it carefully. Your site name will be part of the url you give to your friends so they can visit your site. Lets say you pick the site name of 'jSmith', and the site name is available. Your url to your site would be http://jSmith.HeadTreez.com.

After you click the button to complete your sign up process, your site is created and a password is sent to you within a few minutes.

You can then login and start setting up your new HeadTreez.com site right away.

Managing Your HeadTree

HeadTreez is designed to be very simple. Hopefully so simple my mother could do it, but I haven't tested her yet.

After you login, you will see the header and menu below. This menu is your key navigation aid to get around the Administration interface. Yes, very simple. That's the point.

The main menu bar contains a link for 'My Site', which is where you setup your site header, home page, style sheet, etc.

MySite:

My Documents:

Add documents
Move documents (re-organize your site)
Edit documents

Account Settings:

Setup your profile
Edit bio

First and foremost, managing a HeadTree is simple. You will want to setup your 'Site', then add 'Documents', and then maybe you will want to setup your profile.

My Site

Lets take a look at setting up your HeadTreez site.

Using the 'My Site' link on the main menu, opens the 'My Site' page which shows preview areas of the site description, site header, and the home page.

Notice that there is also a second menu bar allowing us to access the pages for editing these parts of your website as well as the keywords, style sheet. The 'Preview' link will bring you back to this original view of the page.

Site Header

From the 'My Site' page, click the 'Site Header' link in the menu, which will open the editor screen..

What you see below is that for the header we've inserted an image, but no text. Ok its an image of text, but it is an image we created. You can enter text or an image, or both, but for the sake of your guest you will want to keep your header small enough to be appropriate for a site header.

Edit Home Page

On the 'My Site' page, click 'Home Page' in the menu. A text editor opens and you can begin typing the text of your home page. This is very similar to any other text editor you've used, such as Microsoft Word.

After adding or editting your text, click the 'Save' button.

Description

On the 'My Site' page, click the 'Desc / Keywords' link in the top menu.

In the 'Description' box, enter a short description of your HeadTree. For best results try to keep the description to 100 characters or less. This should be plain text, not HTML.

In the 'Keywords' text box, enter the keywords that you feel best describe your site. You can use commas to separate the keywords.

Click 'Save'.

The description and keywords are used in the meta tags of your home page, and as the default for your other pages if you don't specify keywords and descriptions for individual pages. This is helpful to search engines finding your pages.

Edit Style Sheet

On the 'My Site' page, click the 'Style Sheet' link to edit the general style of your site.

If you are familiar with CSS (cascading style sheets), you can type your styles into the text box. If not, you can copy the styles from our sample sites, and then tinker with these to fit your own needs.

The styles you enter here are used in each page of your site so that your site can have a consistent look and feel that is controlled from this central location.

After you make any changes here, click 'Save'.

*Note that this is somewhat advanced so if you are not familiar with html and CSS and would rather use the text editor to set your fonts for each document as you type, that is fine. Just do what is easiest for you.

The Main CSS

If you want to override the standard CSS style sheet, then it will be helpful to you to know what is in that style sheet. By default, each page has a link reference which includes the following styles from /CSS/MainCss.css in your page. This provides the most basic styles of your page.

Additionally when you first create your site, some custom styles are added to add more color to your site. You can delete or edit it on the 'My Site | Styles' page in the HeadTreez Dashboard, and you can override the following items from the MainCss.css file. Images

You can upload your images and store them on our server so they can be shown on your HeadTreez.com site. The amount of space we allot you may change over time. It is set to a 25 MB limit as this is being written.

The 'Image Gallery' is accessible from any of the text editors as shown in the image below.

Clicking the button opens the Image Gallery below. Using the image gallery you can browse to images stored on your local harddrive and upload them to our server. Then you can click the Insert button to put the image into your page.

This screen is pretty self explainatory, so I won't get into lots of details about every setting here.

Since you have a limited amout of space to upload image, you'll want to keep your image sizes as small as possible so we suggest using image optimizing software.

Flash, Media, Files

You can upload Flash, multimedia, and documents such as Word or Adobe files to our server and include them in your site. This is very similar to uploading images. The image below shows you the buttons on the text editor to use to upload and insert files.

The 'My Documents' page is the central command center for managing your documents. On this page you can

Preview Documents
Add new documents
Delete old documents
You can also navigate to the 'Move Documents' page, where you can move your pages all around in your website.

When you first create your HeadTree, there won't be much here, just 1 item which is the root of your site ("HeadTreez" in this example).

So we need to add pages to our site, which we do by:

Selecting a parent item from the left list (really easy when there is only one item there).
Enter a new page name in the text box. (labeled 'New Document Name')
Click 'Add' (or 'Add and Edit' to immediately edit the new page)

That is all it takes to add new pages to your site. Of course these pages will be blank until we add some content to them, but you can very quickly add lots of pages, in the correct place, and then fill out the page content later.

Select any document from the document tree, and the page will display the first portion of that document in the 'Preview' pane.

Don't be nervous about adding pages that you may not need. You can easily move or remove pages.

Edit Document

To edit one of the pages in your HeadTree, go to the 'My Documents' page and select the document from the menu. The page will load the preview box, and you can click the 'Edit/View' link to open the editor.

You should now see the editor (image below) where you can type your document. Just type your document and format it like you are using a word processor (like Microsoft Word), or you can switch to HTML view for more precise control over your page output.

Click 'Save' after making your changes.

*Note the arrow above points to the button which allows you to insert your images from your picture gallery.

Delete Documents

To delete a document, select the document from the tree, then in the 'Preview' pane, click the 'Delete' link. You will then be asked to confirm the deletion.

WARNING: Deleting a document will delete that document and all its sub documents (or 'children' in tree speak).

If you do not want to delete the child documents, reorganize your tree before deleting the document so that the document doesn't have any children. This can be done using the 'Move Documents' page.

Move Documents

One of the great things about HeadTreez is that you can reogranize your documents as you change your mind about how pages should be arranged. Undoubtedly, as you add more documents you will want to nest your documents differently than you did the day you first created your HeadTree.

This is a good time to emphasize that everything in your HeadTree menu is a document (or a page). There are no folders. Documents can have child documents, which makes the menu appear to represent folders with child documents.

All documents can be arranged in any manner that suits you with the exception that the very first item in your menu (your home page), can never be moved. It is the root of your HeadTree.

There are 2 types of movement of your documents and both types of movement are done on the 'Move Documents' page:

Move up/down
Re-root (move to a different parent document)

From the 'My Documents' page, click 'Move Documents' in the top menu.

This opens the 'Move Documents' page which contains 2 lists of your documents.

To re-order documents without changing the parent document:

Select the document to move in the left list.
Use the 'Move Up' and 'Move Down' buttons.

*Note that once the document is the first or last document under it's parent it can not be moved any further up or down the tree to a different parent by using the 'Move Up' or 'Move Down' buttons.

Re-root (move page to a new section of the menu)

In the left list, select the document to move.
In the right list, select the new parent.
Click the 'Re-root' button, to move the document to its new location.

*Note that the document is moved to the last position under its new parent so you may need to use the 'Move Up' function of the left menu to adjust its position.

In the picture below, 'Preview Documents' is a child of 'My Documents' and we are moving it to the new parent of 'My Site'.

If you move an item that has child objects, all the child objects will move with it. This allows you to move a group of objects by moving the parent. You may view parent documents as folders. If you moved a folder you expect all the contents of that folder to still be in the folder after you move it. Moving a document with child documents works the same as moving a folder with files.

Hiding Documents

What if I have documents I don't want to show to the public?

On the Edit Document page, you will see a check box for 'Public'. By unchecking this box, the document will not be shown on the public site, and it will not show up in the menu on your public site.

Warning: HeadTreez should not be used to store sensitive data. Do not store your passwords or other sensitive data on this site.

If you mark a document as private (or not public), then that document will not show in your menu, and therefore none of its children will show in the menu, however you could still send links of the child objects to people so they could reach them. If they are not private, then people can load them with a url even though they aren't showing in the menu. This allows you to share documents with people directly even though you don't have links so the general public can find the pages.

HeadTreez.com is a web site service that allows Members to create unique personal websites online. The services offered by Aquest Solutions, HeadTreez.com ("HeadTreez.com" or "we") include the HeadTreez.com website (the "HeadTreez Website"), and any other features, content, or applications offered from time to time by HeadTreez.com in connection with the HeadTreez Website (collectively, the "HeadTreez Services"). The HeadTreez Services are hosted in the U.S.

This Terms of Use Agreement ("Agreement") sets forth the legally binding terms for your use of the HeadTreez Services. By using the HeadTreez Services, you agree to be bound by this Agreement, whether you are a "Visitor" (which means that you simply browse the HeadTreez Website) or you are a "Member" (which means that you have registered with HeadTreez.com). The term "User" refers to a Visitor or a Member. You are only authorized to use the HeadTreez Services (regardless of whether your access or use is intended) if you agree to abide by all applicable laws and to this Agreement. Password. When you sign up to become a Member, you will be assigned a password. You are entirely responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password. You agree not to use the account, username, or password of another Member at any time or to disclose your password to any third party. You agree to notify HeadTreez.com immediately if you suspect any unauthorized use of your account or access to your password. You are solely responsible for any and all use of your account.
Non-commercial Use by Members. The HeadTreez Services are for the personal use of Members only and may not be used in connection with any commercial endeavors except those that are specifically endorsed or approved by HeadTreez.com. Illegal and/or unauthorized use of the HeadTreez Services, including collecting usernames and/or email addresses of Members by electronic or other means for the purpose of sending unsolicited email or unauthorized framing of or linking to the HeadTreez Website is prohibited. Commercial advertisements, affiliate links, and other forms of solicitation may be removed from the site without notice and may result in termination of Membership privileges. Appropriate legal action will be taken for any illegal or unauthorized use of the HeadTreez Services.
Proprietary Rights in Content on HeadTreez.com.

HeadTreez.com does not claim any ownership rights in the text, files, images, photos, video, sounds, musical works, works of authorship, or any other materials (collectively, "Content") that you post to the HeadTreez Services. Information Collection and Use by HeadTreez.com

HeadTreez.com collects user submitted information such as name, email address, and other information to send notifications to those users relating to the HeadTreez.com service. HeadTreez.com also collects other profile data including but not limited to: personal interests, gender, age, education and occupation in order to improve our service.

HeadTreez.com also logs non-personally-identifiable information including IP address, profile information, aggregate user data, and browser type, from users and visitors to the site. This data is used to manage the website, track usage and improve the website services. I edited my menu on the 'Move Documents' page but when viewing my site, the menu still looks like it did before.

Close your browser and open a new one. The menu is stored in a session variable so it doen't have to be loaded from the database so often, therefore changes to the menu will not show until you create a new session.

How many images can I have on my site?

We allow 25 MB of images to be uploaded. The screen shots we are using on this particular HeadTree are averaging about 25 kilobytes each, so we could have 1024 images at 25 kb each. The number of images you could have will vary based on how well you optimize your images. There are many software programs that will help you resize your images. I want to re-order my HeadTree and move some pages around, but I have links from one page to another. Will this break my links?

No. All the pages are named with a unique document number and even if you move the page to a new part of your HeadTree, the link to that page will remain the same. Also if you have links from a remote site to your HeadTree page, moving the page will not break those links because the page url will remain the same.

If you delete a page and then recreate the page, a new id will be generated so links to the old page will not point to the newly created page.

Done - 3/22/2007 - Minor changes on Search page to prepare for Searches initiated from any page. Nothing visible, other than changed the button positions, but code changes are in place waiting on the next step
Todo - 3/22/2007- Setup search box on all pages so that you can start your search from any page without having to go to the search page first.
